how do water filters for camping work?
Usually, they force water through ceramic filters, which remove just about everything. They are rated by the size of the particles that would go through. (Usually a micron level). Some also have the water go through some kind of silver-coated mesh, which apparently kills bad things as well.
BTW, the energy to "force" the water through comes from some person pumping.
