Foam Camping Pads

How does a "foam roof pad" for carrying a canoe work?
I want to hire a canoe when I go camping next week, and the website says they offer:
"Dwellingup Adventures provide thick foam pads that allow most cars to carry
one canoe. Carrying of the canoes is entirly at the vehicle owners risk."
I emailed them about it, but they didn't answer my question, they just gave me delivery costs (which are really quite expensive), so I was wondering if anyone has ever encountered a similar kind of "foam pad" for carrying canoes? How do they work, and can they be used on a normal sedan car?
So how do you keep the canoe on there? What do you tie it to? (wow, I feel stupid now, but I seriously dont get how you can just *tie* it on the car)

A foam pad protects both the canoe and the car roof but does not always keep the canoe from slipping during transport. A roof rack (see Thule or Yakima) with canoe blocks is a preferable method for transporting a canoe. For retailers see: www.rei.com or www.riversidekayak.com
