Camping Pump
Thursday, January 6th, 2011What should i sleep on when camping?
On a fairly tight budget and with an emphasis on size and weight i wonder what you could recommended for sleeping on. So far we have tried sleeping on nothing (big mistake) and lilos (OK until they went down). What are those self inflating mats like or shal i just go for the extra bulk of a basic inflatable mattress and pump? We have 2x mummy sleeping bags and intend on talking a couple of rugs for if it gets cold.
The cheapest of course is nothing and you can actually sleep without needing a sleeping mat. If the weather is warm then heat loss isn't an issue. Rugs under the sleeping bags can make things a little more comfortable as well.
What is the bigger issue here - weight, size or budget? Assuming with your comment on blankets being available that you are not going to be too far from the car? Then the weight issue is not a big one, and really size is not an issue either. So it comes down to budget.
I would consider an air bed - then you have it in case you get unexpected house guests too, always useful.
The self inflating airbeds are good and more comfortable then foam mats but they can cost more (the market leader - Thermarest are quite expensive, but the cheaper ones, say Gelert, are thicker and cheaper - ideal if you are going to be near a car), they might be my second choice.
